CORONAVIRUS - FALLING NUMBER OF DEATHS ATTRIBUTED TO THE VIRUS

Recorded deaths with Covid-19 disease decreased in January compared to December, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health.

More specifically, as of 20 January 2021, 214 deaths of people diagnosed with COVID-19 have been reported. 67% are for men (n=143 deaths) and the remaining 33% for women (n=71 deaths). Of the 214 deaths, 178 (83%), had an underlying cause of COVID-19. 67% of the total number of deaths with the underlying cause of COVID-19 disease is for men (n=119 deaths) and the remaining 33% for women (n=59 deaths).

The month of December recorded the highest number of deaths of people positive for COVID-19, since the beginning of the pandemic to date, with the rate reaching 40% of the total number of deaths (n=85). In the second week of 2021 (w2/2021) 24 deaths of people positive for COVID-19 disease have been recorded, accounting for 11% of the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to date.

53 deaths involved persons who had their permanent residence in nursing homes, 42 of whom ended up in a public hospital. The highest rate of deaths of people positive for COVID-19, with the underlying cause of death as COVID-19, concerns people with permanent residence in Nicosia (37%) and then Limassol Province (31%).
