THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS IN FAMAGUSTA IS ROCKETING

Filenews 5 December 2020 - by Marilena Panagi

At high levels and well above the specified safety threshold (150/100,000), the cumulative incidence remains, i.e. the number of cases per 100,000 population since this indicator, which is an important tool for capturing the epidemiological picture in Cyprus, has reached 349.8/100,000 population worldwide in the last 14 days.

Of particular concern is this indicator in Famagusta province, which is dangerously close to the levels of Limassol province a few weeks ago after recording 551.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Nicosia and Limassol are at almost the same levels, with Limassol with a proportion of 374.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and Nicosia with 371.7/100,000 population. This is followed by Larnaca with 274.8/100,000 population and Paphos with 143.5 cases per hundred thousand population.

Of particular concern is the fact that in the last 14 days 257 cases have been recorded involving people aged 70 and over, with 119 involving people aged 70-79 and 138 elderly people aged 80 and over. Important that the total number does not include the 60 new cases detected the day before yesterday in two nursing homes in Nicosia.

Equally important for scientists is the rate of "positivity". That is, the ratio between the number of daily cases and the number of laboratory tests carried out around the clock. According to official data, from 1 to 29 November, the "positivity" rate ranged between 3.6% and 5.1% at the time the safety limit is set at 1%.

The overall picture of Cyprus in terms of deaths from the day of the start of the pandemic to date is quite good. However, the data recorded in November are of concern for continuity, with a total of 35 deaths accounting for 47% of the total number of deaths of patients with coronavirus.
