STORES REOPEN ON SUNDAY 27 DECEMBER

Filenews 25 December 2020 - by Adamos Adamou

Since the December salary was paid to the public and wider public sector on Tuesday, market traffic has recorded an increase, which has peaked, leading some shops to be forced, due to the measures taken for the pandemic, to close after 6 p.m. as provided for by the legislation on working hours on Christmas Eve.

Now, under the legislation, general stores (ie. supermarkets and shops for clothing, footwear and electrical appliances) will operate again from Sunday, since today and December 26th are public holidays, according to the legislation. Holiday for general stores is also the 1st, 2nd and 6th of January.

On New Year's Eve, general shops can remain open until 6:00 p.m., but it is not excluded that there will again be a slight extension and tolerance to the observance of the hours due to the pandemic.

In the meantime, the increase in the market in recent days confirmed, speaking to "F", the secretary general of the Cyprus Association of Retail Trade, Marios Antoniou, noting that particularly in the food, beverage and toy businesses there was a lot of mobility. However, the clothing and footwear sector, he added, is well behind other years because of the pandemic and the measures in place to stop it, which have not allowed enough stores to operate.
