A new public row broke out between the Archbishop and two Bishops after the head of the Cyprus orthodox church described them as ‘bitter’ and ‘bad boys’ in a Sunday interview with Politis.
Archbishop Chrysostomos alleged their opposition to his recent decision to back the autonomy of the Ukrainian church was because they were sill angry over his election at the helm of the island’s orthodoxy.
He was referring to Bishop of Limassol Athanassios and Kykkou and Tyllirias Nikiforos with whom he has been at odds for years.
Both Bishops strongly objected to the public insults and said in separate statements that the Archbishop has shamelessly lowered the standard and institution of the Holy Synod and of the church of Cyprus.
They also said that what the Archbishop alleged were lies and slander and expressed shame that he had spoilt the holy spirit of the Christmas days.
Bishop Athanasios went a step further expressing regret that the leader of the Church chose hours of agony over the covid pandemic and its serious consequences “to scandalize people and to crush the all-encompassing spirit”.
