Filenews 23 December 2020
The Ministry of Health announces that today, 23 December 2020:
- Three people have died of COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 104.
- 146 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 34 of whom are in serious condition.
- A total of 14,188 disease detection tests have been carried out, of which 4,343 have been carried out using the molecular method (PCR) and 9,845 using the rapid test method.
- 477 new cases of the disease were detected and confirmed by molecular tests (PCRs), bringing the total number of cases to 18,883. The 477 include 175 verifications from rapid tests in the previous days.
- In 233 cases the rapid antigen test had a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The three people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 concern:
- A man, aged 90 years, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Famagusta General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 94, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Famagusta General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 97, with underlying diseases, who lived in the Archangel Michael House.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 104, of which:
- 66 men (63%), and
- 38 women (37%).
The average age of the deceased from the disease is 80 years.
B. Hospitalized:
A total of 146 patients with COVID-19 disease are hospitalized in OKYY hospitals, 34 of whom are in serious condition.
Of the 34 patients critical, 15 are intubated, one is hospitalized in the Off-Respirator Intensive Care Unit and 18 in the Increased Care Unit.
In detail the situation in the hospitals is as follows:
C. Molecular Examination (PCR test): Of the 4,343 laboratory diagnoses carried out today by the Molecular Method (PCR), 477 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, resulting as follows:
- 133 cases from 831 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases.
- 4 cases from 792 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 118 cases from 2,064 samples taken through a private initiative.
- 46 cases from 400 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 1 case of 23 samples taken as part of the referral program by Personal Physicians and Special Teams Control through Public Health Clinics.
- 175 cases from 180 samples taken for verification using the molecular test method of positive results detected through the rapid antigen test method in the previous days. Verification using the molecular examination method is carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.
In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:
- 53 samples taken from the residents of Kato Pyrgos, Tylliria
Of the 9,845 tests carried out using the rapid test, 233 positive results were obtained.
These 233 cases will be examined using the PCR molecular method in order to be verified.
In detail, the rapid antigen detection tests were carried out today as follows:
