 Filenews 24 December 2020

Three more people have died today from COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 107. At the same time, 433 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCR), bringing the total number of cases to 19,316.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Health 142 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 34 are in serious condition.

The 433 new cases include 94 verifications from rapid tests of the previous days.

A total of 8,720 disease detection tests have been carried out, including 4,024 with the molecular method (PCR) and 4,696 with the rapid test.

In 154 cases the rapid antigen test had a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The three people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 concern:

  • Man, aged 83, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Famagusta General Hospital.
  • Man, aged 94, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Nicosia General Hospital.
  • Woman, aged 95, with underlying diseases, residing in the Polydynamos of Agios Antonios.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 107, of which:

C. MOLECULAR TEST : Of the 4,024 laboratory diagnoses carried out today with the Molecular Method (PCR), 433 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, resulting as follows:

  • 172 cases out of 995 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 122 cases from 1,771 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 45 cases from 363 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 94 cases from 103 samples taken for verification using the molecular test method of positive results detected through the rapid antigen test method in the previous days. Verification using the molecular examination method is carried out by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • 722 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 16 samples taken as part of the referral program by Personal Physicians and special teams control through the Public Health Clinics.
