274 NEW CASES AND TWO DEATHS FRIDAY - AND 114 POSITIVE RAPID TESTS AWAITING FORMAL PCR

The deaths of two patients and 274 new cases of COVID-19 disease were announced today Friday.

The final cause of death of the two patients who died today is attributed to COVID-19.

In particular, they are:

  • A man, aged 74, with underlying diseases, who was treated at Famagusta General Hospital after being transferred from the Ekali rehabilitation centre, Limassol.
  • Man, aged 70, with underlying diseases, hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital

The total number of deaths with covid-19 disease is 43.    27 men (63%) and 16 women (37%), with an average age of 75 years.

At Famagusta General Hospital, 61 people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, six of whom are in the Increased Care Unit. In addition, a total of nine patients are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of nicosia General Hospital, four of them off-respirator. Another 12 people are being treated in a COVID-19 ward at nicosia General Hospital, while seven patients are being treated in the Limassol General Hospital.

Of the 21 cases identified by the nursing home control programme, 15 concern the Panagia nursing home in Limassol (staff and inmates) and the other concern Melathron EOKA.

A total of 12,077 tests were carried out today to detect COVID-19.

A. Molecular Examination (PCRtest): Of the 12,077 laboratory tests, 5,022 laboratory diagnoses were carried out using the Molecular Method (PCR), with 274 new cases of COVID-19 disease resulting as follows:

  • Of 659 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases, 51 cases were identified.
  • Of 1,317 samples taken through a private initiative, 65 cases were detected.
  • Of 400 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals, 21 cases were detected.
  • Of 126 samples taken as part of the referral programme by Personal Physicians and special teams control through the Public Health Clinics, 38 cases were identified.
  • Of 980 samples taken in Limassol Province as part of a check of workers who fall under the exemptions for travel to and from the Limassol and Paphos Provinces, 7 cases were detected.
  • Of 394 samples taken in Paphos Province under the control of workers who fall under the exemptions for travel to and from the Limassol and Paphos Provinces, 6 cases were detected.
  • Of 525 samples taken in the Nicosia Province as part of a check of workers who fall under the exemptions for travel to and from the Limassol and Paphos Provinces, 2 cases were detected.
  • Of 132 samples taken under the laboratory testing programme carried out in nursing homes and other structures, 21 cases were identified.
  • Of 126 samples taken under the migrant structure control programme, 11 cases were detected.
  • The 1 sample taken as part of a sample check carried out by the COP on Associations participating in its competitions is positive for the virus.
  • The 51 cases relate to cases that had been positively identified through the rapid antigen test method in the previous days and were verified using the PCR method. Positive rapid antigen detection tests confirmed by the PCR method are included in the total number of cases below.

In addition, laboratory tests were carried out by the following programmes, without the detection of a case:

  • From samples taken as part of the control programme for pupils, teachers and school staff, 31 laboratory tests were completed.
  • From samples taken in the context of passenger and repatriated checks, 225 laboratory diagnoses were carried out, and
  • From samples taken from the residents of Kato Pyrgos Tylliria, 106 laboratory diagnoses were completed.

Therefore, and on the basis of the data so far, the total number of cases amounts to 8,253.

B. Antigen rapid test: Of the 12,077 tests, 7,055 were performed using the rapid test method, with 114 positive results, identified as follows:
