CYPRUS' LAW ON PHONE TAPPING OFFICIALLY COMES INTO FORCE

in-cyprus 28 February 2020 -Edited by

Cyprus’ law on phone tapping has come into force following the appointment of a three-member committee which will be submitting the requests for lifting of the confidentiality of telecommunications data, Phileleftheros reported on Friday.
The request will be subject to the approval of the attorney-general, while a court order will be issued after the court is satisfied that the conditions are met.
In addition, only authorised members of the police or the intelligence service and for a limited amount of time will be able to carry out the surveillance.
The names of the Committee members were kept a secret, but insiders told Phileleftheros that the three appointees were the President of the Republic’s choice.

The new law was published last week in the Republic’s gazette.
