LAPITHOS HOTEL DEMOLISHED AFTER BUILT KNOWINGLY ON MISSING PERSONS' BURIAL SITE - Cy Mail 6/11 by Rebekah Gregoriades

A hotel constructed in occupied Lapithos in the 1980s with the contractor knowingly covering human remains discovered during foundation works, is now being demolished under the supervision of the Committee on Missing persons (CMP), following information provided by the worker who found them.

Greek Cypriot CMP representative Leonidas Pantelides told the Cyprus News Agency the contractor at the time had ordered the remains to be covered up and construction to move forward, and pleas to dissuade him had fallen on deaf ears.

Construction work did halt later on due to financial difficulties and the hotel passed into the hands of a new contractor, who decided to demolish it.

The European Commission throws a "hot potato" on Monday at the table of EU finance ministers. It brings back for the final discussion its proposal for exorbitant tax increases on traditional tobacco products and their extension to newer types of tobacco and nicotine, such as e-cigarettes, heated canoes and nicotine pouches.

At Monday's Ecofin meeting, the Irish presidency is seeking to secure a political agreement, which is already meeting with strong opposition.  The Commission considers existing consumption taxes obsolete and invokes "support for public health and alignment of fiscal policy with current market dynamics".
