Velychko Gallery in Limassol presents MURMUR kairos, a solo exhibition by Cypriot artist Kyriaki Costa showcasing a new body of work comprising sculpture, embroidery and painting. Running throughout October, November and December, the exhibition departs from the idiom “canary in the coal mine” to speak about the murmurs heeding a response at such a decisive time.

Coined in the early 19th century, the expression stems from coal miners relying on caged canaries and their heightened sensitivity to toxic fumes to alert them to evacuate before suffocating. This is why the expression has been used to denote either an event or a person who signals oncoming danger.

Every morning at 9:00am, Ukraine stops.

City streets full of life fall silent.

Traffic lights turn red. Cars stop.

For one minute, a country pauses.

SALT OF THE EARTH - A TALE OF COLONIAL CYPRUS

The story actually begins in 1948, long before the mukhtar of Inia – in British colonial Cyprus, where Roussounis’ grandfather Demetris was arrested by the police in Arodes for stealing salt

What’s the story behind Salt, a brand-new 20-minute film premiering on Monday 12th October at the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus?

In a way, it begins with the mukhtar of Inia.

Back in 2021, peeved that the government’s proposed Akamas plan didn’t let the villagers put umbrellas and sunbeds on Lara beach, the mukhtar demanded that Inia should instead take over all the salt production in the area.
