THINGS AND MIRACLES IN A DANGEROUS APARTMENT BUILDING IN LARNACA - SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS OF THREATS, TERROR OF TENANTS, ELECTRICITY THEFT AND ARBITRARY ACCOMMODATION - Filenews 2/10 by Natasa Christoforou

The Management Committee of the Filanta Court complex, on Makarios Avenue in Larnaca, which has been deemed dangerous by the local District Organization of Larnaca, makes serious complaints and requests that the competent authorities intervene immediately. In its announcement, it speaks of illegal electricity and water connections, exploitation of apartments without the consent of the owners, arbitrary and overcrowded accommodation, but also threats against the legal owners.

It is noted that this is a complex of 5 apartment buildings located near the port, in which on May 27 a foreigner lost his life and two others were injured when they jumped from balconies to avoid being arrested, during an operation by the Aliens and Immigration Service.

The Management Committee states that the legal owners of apartments and premises express strong concern and protest about the incidents that, as they claim, take place in the common and other areas of the apartment buildings. Among other things, they complain of possession of apartments with false, invalid or illegal rental contracts, without the consent of the legal owners, as well as renting apartments and collecting income from third parties without the consent of the owners.

The Commission speaks, in fact, of indications of money laundering, through the collection of rents from non-beneficiaries, as well as of illegal trading of electricity and water. He also notes that illegal electricity connections are made, either directly to meters or through external wiring from apartment to apartment, which, as reported, were checked by the EAC and deemed dangerous. They also complain of illegal connections to the water supply network, theft of water and the supply or trade of water from one meter to other apartments.

The legal owners claim that they have received threats and denounce cases in which people "shout and terrorize tenants". The Management Committee has already filed a complaint with the Police against specific individuals.

He states, meanwhile, that in collaboration with the EOA of Larnaca, he has appointed a civil engineer and is proceeding with laboratory tests to see the state of the statics of the apartment buildings. He also adds that measures have been taken, following the suggestions of the EOAL, to protect tenants and passers-by from falling plaster, while actions are planned for repairs and renovation of the buildings.

"The illegal or unauthorized use of spaces, overcrowding, arbitrary accommodation and possible interventions in communal or private infrastructure create serious issues of safety, hygiene, public order and property protection," the announcement notes, in which the competent authorities are called upon to investigate the complaints and prosecute those who break the law.

It is also requested to check the legality of use and residence in the premises of the buildings, to check and remove electrical and plumbing connections that are removed and reconnected, as well as to take all necessary measures to protect the safety, health and property of the legal owners and tenants.

The Management Committee clarifies that the owners' protest is not directed against any national, racial or religious group, but concerns, as it says, "exclusively the legality, safety, proper functioning of the apartment building and the protection of the rights of the legal owners and users".

It is noted that "F" has repeatedly raised in a series of reports, for two years now, what is unacceptable happening in the apartment building in question, since it has repeatedly received complaints from both legal tenants in the apartment building, and from neighbours who shout both about the nuisance and about the miserable situation that prevails outside.
