STRANGE TURKISH CONSTRUCTION WORRIED DENIA - WHAT THE UNITED NATIONS SAID TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITY

STRANGE TURKISH CONSTRUCTION WORRIED DENIA - WHAT THE UNITED NATIONS SAID TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITY - Filenews 27/10 by Andreas Pogiatzis

A strange, cruciform building appeared a few months ago, on the borders of the buffer zone towards the occupied side in the area of Denia. This special construction is located 2.1 kilometers west and 0.5 kilometers north of the center of Dénia and was noticed after analyzing satellite images, as trenches of the occupying army are located nearby at the site, the work of which began in January 2024.

This time, the indications point to more than just digging an anti-tank trench, as a reinforced concrete structure can be seen. According to information from filenews, the foundations (pedilo) are located at a depth of two and a half meters, which indicates a particularly strong structure.

The local authorities asked the United Nations for explanations - What they answered

The building and the intense construction activity were noticed by the inhabitants of Denia. The response of the United Nations peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) to the community council, what it is about, was that an aqueduct / tank is being erected at the site.

For its part, the community council of the village expressed its reservations about the construction as, as the community president Charalambos Alexandrou told filenews, it is a large construction made of reinforced concrete with large sturdy columns.

Reservations about the use of the building are also raised as to its location, since it is being built right on the boundaries of the dead zone, in the middle of trenches and military positions.

The activity of the occupying army in Dénia

The activities of the occupying army in the area of Denia have repeatedly provoked reactions, both for the harassment of Greek Cypriot farmers in the buffer zone and for the execution of fortifications on the occupied side, near the ceasefire line. In January 2024, the then community president, Christakis Panayiotou, reported that excavators were constructing trenches at a distance of 50 to 100 meters from fields cultivated by Greek Cypriots. The United Nations and the competent services of the Republic had been informed about the work.

At the same time, there are repeated complaints about the obstruction of farmers who go to the buffer zone to cultivate their land. On September 23, 2026, the president of the community, Charalambos Alexandrou, complained that two Turkish uniformed officers, who were riding in a vehicle of the occupying army, attempted to remove cultivators, citing a 1998 map. According to him, in the previous two months, two to three such incidents were recorded per week.

UNFICYP intervened for this particular incident, sending peacekeepers to the area. The Force's spokesman, Alim Siddiq, said the intervention was made after reports of a violation within the buffer zone, with the aim of de-escalating tensions and restoring calm. The EU authorities are calling for unhindered access to their fields for farmers.
