Richer by €116,000, 977 civil servants will each leave the state machine in 2027, as they will retire and receive a lump sum. These employees will receive tips totalling €113.3 million in their bank accounts.
These are employees who work in various sectors of the public sector and who will retire, either due to age limit or early.
Compared to 2026, the amount to be given next year for tips is increased by approximately €12 million. Specifically, this year it is estimated that a total of 926 employees will retire, receiving a lump sum of €102.3 million. The average lump sum is around €110,500.
In 2025, a total of 936 employees retired, receiving a lump sum of €101.5 million.
In the last ten years, the total amount of tips paid by the state to hundreds of workers who retired early or at the age of 65, which is the normal retirement age, reaches €1 billion.
Specifically, the state paid a total amount of €939.1 million, while in the coming years the amount of lump sums is expected to increase further.
According to the 2027 state budget, the tips of €113.3 million. 977 employees will be distributed as follows:
· 427 civil servants will retire, receiving tips of €49 million. Of the total number of retirees, 307 will retire due to age limit and 120 early or due to resignation.
· 385 teachers will also retire, receiving a lump sum of €44.5 million. Of these, 325 will retire due to age limit and 60 will receive early retirement.
· Another 55 members of the Police and the Fire Service will retire, receiving a lump sum of €5.2 million. It is worth noting that 35 will retire as they have reached the age of 65, while 20 will receive early retirement.
· A total of 110 members of the Cypriot army will retire, receiving tips of €13.5 million. Of these, 80 will retire due to the age limit and 30 will receive early retirement.
· Amount €600,000 will be granted to employees who retire from the government due to their appointment to Public Law Organizations or other organizations.
· Tips amounting to €200,000 will be given to temporary (on-site) staff and temporary employees (SYOP) who retire voluntarily, due to age limit or death.
· Lump sum of €300,000 will also be received by officials of the Republic who will retire. However, due to the distortions that continue to exist in the law on the abolition of multiple pensions, some existing state officials will continue to work and at the same time receive a pension.
At the same time, in 2027 the state will pay an amount of €466 million. for pensions to public employees. Compared to this year, the amount to be paid next year is increased by €8 million, without ruling out the possibility that the increase is also due to the pension reform.
This year, the state will pay pensions to former government employees for a total amount of €458 million, while in 2025 pensions of €436 million were paid.
According to the state budget, in 2027 the state will grant €185 million. to retired civil servants. Also, an amount of €131.6 million will be paid. for the pensions of retired teachers.
In addition, pensions amounting to €48.8 million. will be paid to retired police officers and firefighters and €30.8 million. to retired military personnel. An amount of €69.8 million will also be paid. for pensions to widows and orphans of state employees.
