SPECIAL EDUCATION - CHILDREN'S ASSESSMENT TEAMS ARE BACK - WHAT IS CHANGING AND WHAT IS THEIR ROLE - Filenews 20/10 by Evangelia Sizopoulou

With the aim of applying common criteria, as well as a common methodology in the procedures for the evaluation and re-evaluation of children with special needs, the Evaluation – Re-evaluation Teams will operate again this year.

According to a circular of Primary Education, the operation of the Assessment – Re-evaluation Groups of Children with Special Needs continues this school year and these groups consist of Special Teachers of Learning, Mental, Functional and Adaptive Difficulties and Speech Pathologists, who are members of the multidisciplinary evaluation – re-evaluation team.

As mentioned, these teachers evaluate – re-evaluate children at the school where they attend, and at the same time consult and collect information on each case, in full cooperation with the school units. It is noted that the operation of these groups aims to apply common criteria and methodology for the assessment and re-evaluation of the needs of children referred to the District Committees for Special Education and Training (EEEAE), in order to ensure uniformity and minimize subjectivity in decision-making.

The school administrations, which received the circular, are invited to cooperate with these groups, ensuring an appropriate space for the conduct of evaluations and re-evaluations of their students and for the provision of appropriate information. It is also stated that the EEEAE will inform the school administrations in writing, whether the evaluations – re-evaluations of their students will be carried out by the specific group of special teachers or in exceptional cases by the special teacher of Learning, Mental, Functional and Adaptive Difficulties or the speech therapist of the school.
