New cases of bluetongue have been detected in livestock farms in the districts of Limassol and Nicosia, bringing to five the total number of infected units nationwide.
The new confirmed case in the Limassol district was recorded on September 30, 2026 and concerns a livestock unit in which a total of 941 sheep and goats are raised. In the province of Nicosia, the case was confirmed on September 25 and concerns a unit with 456 sheep and goats.
In total, 2,178 sheep and goats are bred in the five units that have been infected nationwide, while 52 animals have been infected so far. Of these, three were recorded in Limassol and four in Nicosia, according to the data that have become known.
Since the onset of the disease, a total of 10 animal deaths have been recorded.
Bluetongue is caused by serotype 4 (BTV-4) of the virus and is transmitted through insect-vectors, mainly mosquitoes. It is not transmitted from animal to animal by direct contact and is not a disease transmitted to humans.
The competent Veterinary Services are monitoring the situation and taking the prescribed measures in the affected units, with the aim of limiting the spread of the disease.
