COMPLAINT ABOUT AN UNREGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL - WHAT THE ASSOCIATION SAYS

COMPLAINT ABOUT AN UNREGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL - WHAT THE ASSOCIATION SAYS - Filenews 9/10

A complaint about the case of an external partner in a public school, who allegedly provides psychological services to students without appearing to have the required registration in an approved specialty, announces the Cyprus Psychologists Association (SDSK). According to an announcement by the Association, this person seems to be exercising duties that fall within the scope of a registered psychologist, while the particular seriousness of the issue is underlined when services are aimed at underage children and other vulnerable populations.
The Association points out that "the exercise of duties that fall within the professional field of a registered psychologist, by a qualified psychologist, constitutes a violation of the current legislation, which becomes particularly serious when such duties are assigned, provided for or exercised in the context of public services or organizations".

In this context, the Psychologist clarifies the distinction between registration in the Register of Graduate Psychologists and registration in the Register of Registered Psychologists, explaining that, by law, the graduate psychologist is limited to teaching psychology topics, research in areas of psychology and interviewing with the sole purpose of referring to a registered psychologist.

He also points out that an issue is also raised in the context of the operation of the Police, in relation to which professional is competent to assess the psychological suitability of members of the Police to carry weapons and whether such an assessment is carried out by qualified psychologists, given the seriousness and responsibility that such an evaluation entails.

The DSC also recalls that in a statement in July 2026 he clarified "that the psychological assessment and support services of the members of the Police are required to be provided by professionals registered in the Register of Registered Psychologists", adding that "this issue has already been raised by the DSK, through relevant memoranda, both to the Minister of Justice and Public Order and before the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights".

Finally, it calls on the competent authorities to review the existing practices, to clarify the duties assigned to Graduate Psychologists in public services and to take the appropriate steps that services that constitute the practice of the profession of registered psychologist are provided exclusively by persons who have the corresponding legal right to practice.
