The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the distinguished conductor Yiannis Protopapas, invites audiences on a captivating cinematic journey, where the timeless melodies of Nino Rota meet Nikos Kypourgos’s imaginative Sweet Suite, inspired by the unforgettable themes of Manos Hadjidakis.
The unforgettable cinematic world of Nino Rota is brought to life through masterful excerpts from his music for movies such as The Godfather, Amarcord and 8½ – music of extraordinary beauty and emotional power that moves audiences across generations.
Manos Hadjidakis’ music for both Greek and international film productions, constitutes a rich and multifaceted body of work, in which his melodic inventiveness and deeply poetic vision illuminate the dramatic narrative with exceptional sensitivity.
Nikos Kypoyrgos composed his Sweet Suite as a musical tribute to Manos Hadjidakis, drawing on themes from nine distinguished film scores by the composer: Greece, the Land of Dreams (1961), Blue (1968), The 300 Spartans (1962), Lost Dreams (1961), Sweet Movie (1974), Free Dive (1995), Never on Sunday (1960), Honeymoon (1979), and America America (1963). While preserving Hadjidakis’ original melodies, Kypoyrgos leaves his own artistic imprint through form, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, and orchestration. At the initiative of conductor Myron Michailidis, Sweet Suite was recorded and released in 2009 by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, under his direction.
