AGATHI SAVVIDOU'S PROPOSAL FOR A CHRISTMAS VILLAGE AT THE PREFECT'S HOUSE FOR DECEMBER 2027

AGATHI SAVVIDOU'S PROPOSAL FOR A CHRISTMAS VILLAGE AT THE PREFECT'S HOUSE FOR DECEMBER 2027 -  Pafos Live 10/10

It is a particularly well-crafted, targeted and realistic proposal with strong symbolism for the city of Paphos. It combines three main pillars: the promotion of cultural heritage (opening of the District Officer's House), the historical continuity of the city (10 years since "Paphos 2017") and the social/economic stimulation of the local community.

In view of the official submission of the proposal to the Plenary Session of the Municipal Council, some points and corrections that can further strengthen the text:
1. Text Corrections & TyposTypo: In the Social Contribution section, it is written "The 0th Christmas Village" (instead of "The").
Title of signature: "Municipal Councillor of DIKO Paphos" (instead of "Councillors").
2. Strategic Points to Strengthen the Proposal in Plenary

Crowd Management: As the District Officer's House is a listed monument and the gardens have a specific load-bearing capacity, the reference to pre-bookings/control of the flow of visitors indoors will respond in advance to possible objections of technical services or the Department of Antiquities.

Traffic & Parking: The area around the House has specific traffic possibilities. It is worth adding a brief reference to a traffic management plan (e.g. utilization of neighbouring municipal parking lots, illuminated pedestrian route or cooperation with OSYPA).

Synergy with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism: The Deputy Ministry annually subsidizes the official "Christmas Villages" in Cyprus. The proposal may provide for a request for inclusion or co-financing from relevant programs, reducing the cost for the Municipality's treasury.

Symbolism of 2027: The timing for December 2027 ideally serves as the culmination of the anniversary activities for the decade of Paphos 2017. It can also be projected as the official "closing ceremony" of the anniversary year, giving even more weight to the event.
Final Proposed Text for Submission

Proposal: Organization of a Christmas Village at the Historic House of the Prefect

As part of the anniversary celebrations for the 10th anniversary of the European Capital of Culture "Pafos 2017"

It is proposed to organize a special Christmas Village in the historic House of the Prefect, as the first official event and symbolic opening of the space to the public, in the context of the anniversary celebrations for the completion of ten years since "Paphos 2017".

The Christmas Village

The gardens of the House can host elegant wooden houses with local products, traditional dishes and festive drinks, children's experiential workshops, choirs and musical ensembles. The subtle lighting will highlight the natural beauty of the garden and the architecture of the building, creating a warm, festive environment for young and old alike.

At the same time, the interiors can host selected cultural activities, fairy tale narratives and thematic exhibitions, with strict provision for the protection of the historical shell and a controlled flow of visitors.

The Connection with "Paphos 2017"

The event will be a highlight of the 2027 anniversary events, hosting a retrospective exhibition of photographs and archival material from Pafos 2017, as well as actions by local creators who participated in the city's cultural course.

Social Contribution

The Christmas Village will have a practical charitable character. Through partnerships with local businesses, volunteers and social organizations, vulnerable families and children will be supported, ensuring full transparency in the management of contributions.

Organization and Timeline

It is proposed that a special working group be set up immediately by the competent services of the Municipality for:

Ensuring the necessary approvals and security/accessibility measures.
The preparation of a traffic management and parking plan.
The investigation of co-financing (e.g. Deputy Ministry of Tourism, sponsorships).
Proposed operating period: December 15–23, 2027.

The Vision

The District Officer's House can and should become an active cultural lung for Paphos. The establishment of the Christmas Village as an institution will connect historical memory with the vibrant community, strengthening the local economy, culture, and social cohesion.

Agathi Savvidou

Municipal Councillor of DIKO Paphos
