500 TONS OF SLUDGE AND SECONDARY TREATED WATER HAD LEAKED INTO THE AREA OF MONI IN AUGUST - Filenews 9/10 by Vassos Vassiliou

About 500 cubic meters of sludge and secondary treated water had leaked on August 5 from the emergency pipeline of the Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant in Moni, as stated in an answer by the Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Ioannou, to a question by MP Michalis Paraskevas.

The leak is attributed to an unforeseen failure and specifically, as stated in the answer, it concerned a valve failure in the Unit's sand filter system.
According to the answer, when the problem was identified, the Unit's staff made the necessary adjustments to the control system (of the Unit) in order to limit the leakage and then repaired the damage.

The answer states that the outflow lasted about two and a half hours, specifically from 3.30-6.30 in the afternoon.

It is further stated that the secondary treated water had not gone through the sand filter stage and the chlorination stage.

A relevant video was also shown by the Omega TV station. It is recalled that the communities of Moni and Monagroullio had recruited divers who filmed the leak from the pipelines which were in the sea in the area of  Moni in Limassol.

At that time, samples of the leaked liquids and mud were taken and sent for analysis to a private laboratory. According to what had been transmitted, the analysis showed the presence of coliform bacteria and enterococcus.

It is recalled that at that time there were reactions not only from the affected communities but also from bathers.
