Interruption in the supply of electricity and water, total or partial demolition of a building, registration of real encumbrance on the property, recovery of support costs and strengthening of penalties is provided for by a bill submitted by the Parliamentary Committee on the Interior and has begun to be discussed, in order to deal with the problem of dangerous buildings.
The issue will also be examined from a legal technical point of view so that it does not conflict with the Constitution and in this direction the issue will be discussed by the bodies involved.
The general director of the Ministry of the Interior, Mr. Elikkos Elias, stated that the basic philosophy of the proposal, which is supported by the ministry, focuses on the assumption of the responsibility of restoring the danger of buildings to the owners, as is the case today, but with stricter provisions in the legislation.
Mr. Elias stated that the EOAs must intervene in individual cases and when the safety of citizens is threatened and not in all cases of dangerous constructions.
He also estimated that based on the provisions promoted, the cases in which the intervention of the NGOs will be required will be limited
He further stated that the ministry approved a fund of €2 million to EOAs to support action on dangerous buildings.
The president of the EOA Nicosia, expressing the views of the other EOAs, said that the government should approve a fund of €2 million. for ten years so that the Organizations can operate.
The president of the EOA Larnaca stated that for 351 potentially dangerous buildings, it was estimated that €7 million will be required. A total of 1,087 buildings were located in Larnaca.
A representative of the EOA Limassol said that €150.000 was spent from 2025 to support two dangerous buildings, which they have not yet received from the Ministry of the Interior.
