In progress are the maintenance works of the iron bridge of Trozena, which is located on the road leading to the abandoned village, but is also used by those who want to go from the area to the province of Paphos.
After more than three decades, the famous iron bridge, which "flies" over the gorge, is being maintained, while at the same time its foundations are being checked.
Speaking to "F", the president of the community of Arsos, Giannakis Giannakis, stated that, with the intervention of the Community Council of Gerovasa - Trozena, which is under the jurisdiction and administrative responsibility of the Community Council of Arsos, the Limassol District Administration was asked to maintain the bridge where the water of a tributary of the Diarizos flows.
As he noted, after bids were requested for the maintenance work, the wooden floor of the bridge was replaced in the previous period. During this period, cleaning of the metal structure from rust, checking the foundations and painting the bridge is carried out. For the safety of citizens, large stones have been placed in front of the bridge so that vehicles cannot pass through it during the works.
The works are expected to be completed by the end of October, when the road will be opened to the public again.
"No one closed the bridge. We asked for it, because we thought it was dangerous and we asked as a first concern to check the foundations and strength of iron. The bridge is used by people and has not been maintained for more than 30 years," said Mr. Giannakis.
For the record, it should be mentioned that it is an iron bridge, which was built in 1959 – 1960 by an English engineer, with a design that was a common choice of the British, i.e. a metal frame and a wooden floor on beams.
Without arches, it connects the two banks, which are a few meters away from each other, giving the impression that the bridge is floating. The bridge was built to serve the two villages, Trozena and Gerovasa, but also the viticulturists of Arsos, who maintained vineyards and orchards in the area. Only one vehicle can pass through the bridge at a time, while its total weight should not exceed eight tons.
