An experimental biometric corridor identifies travellers as they walk, but faster immigration could come at the cost of more facial surveillance.
You have survived the flight, wrestled your bag out of the overhead locker, and followed the crowd into arrivals. Then you turn a corner and see it: an immigration queue stretching halfway across the airport.
A new type of border control promises to make that familiar travel headache disappear according to a report from the BBC.
Instead of stopping at a desk, placing a passport on a scanner, or waiting for an electronic gate to open, travelers would simply walk through a corridor. Cameras would scan their faces as they moved, while artificial intelligence checked their identity against passport information submitted before the journey.
No desks. No turnstiles. In theory, no queue.
The technology was demonstrated to mathematician and broadcaster Professor Hannah Fry during an episode of the BBC series The Secret Genius of Modern Life. In the clip, Fry walks through an experimental “digital travel lane” as cameras capture her facial features and identify her almost instantly.
The system was developed by aviation technology company SITA with facial-recognition specialist Paravision. It is designed to turn a traveller’s face into a digital travel credential, effectively allowing the person, not the little booklet buried somewhere inside a handbag, to become the passport.
Before travelling, a passenger’s identity would be verified using the information stored in the chip of a biometric passport. At the airport, high-definition cameras would measure facial features and compare them with that verified digital record.
People whose identities are confirmed could continue walking. Those who cannot be matched, or whose details trigger an alert, would be directed to an immigration officer for further checks.
SITA says a corridor just one meter wide could process up to 1,800 passengers an hour, around six times the capacity of conventional electronic gates. The figure is the company’s estimate and would have to be tested under real airport conditions, where children, families, luggage, crowded terminals, and the occasional traveller walking in entirely the wrong direction tend to complicate even the best technology.
For passengers, however, the appeal is obvious.
Anyone travelling to a country outside a passport-free area knows that immigration can add another hour, or more, to an already exhausting journey. A short flight can sometimes be followed by a wait at passport control that lasts almost as long as the flight itself.
The idea could also help governments facing rising passenger numbers and pressure at their borders. Routine travellers could be cleared more quickly, allowing immigration officers to concentrate on people who require additional checks.
But a faster airport border should not be confused with a solution to irregular migration.
Biometric corridors could improve identity checks at official entry points, but they would not stop people entering through unofficial routes or address the reasons people migrate or replace asylum and immigration procedures. They are primarily a way of processing known travellers more efficiently.
There are also serious questions about privacy.
Facial biometric information cannot be replaced as easily as a password if it is stolen or misused. Authorities would need to explain where the images are stored, how long they are kept, which agencies can access them, and whether travelers can choose a conventional passport check instead.
Facial-recognition systems have also faced criticism over incorrect matches and differences in accuracy between demographic groups. Developers say performance has improved significantly, but even a tiny error rate matters when millions of people pass through an airport.
There is another practical issue: the physical passport is not disappearing just yet. Countries would have to agree on common digital standards, data protection rules, and procedures for travelers whose phones fail, whose information cannot be retrieved, or whose faces do not match the system’s expectations.
