The Municipality of Nicosia is employing drones to deal with mosquito outbreaks, utilizing technology and innovation in the context of actions to ensure public health.
According to the mayor, Charalambos Prountzos, the use of drones will soon be extended to the "Kateva" channel in Pallouriotissa, as well as to other places where mosquito outbreaks are found.
The intervention is part of the efforts to deal with the problem more effectively and limit the breeding grounds.
The move comes a few days after the Municipality announced that spraying continues on a daily basis, even on weekends, with the use of approved preparations in areas where outbreaks have been identified or complaints have been submitted by citizens.
Particular emphasis has been placed on the area of Engomi, with interventions in Klimos from the border of Lakatamia to Agios Dometios, near the cemetery and the State Exhibition, but also in the open canal along Iroon Street. Inspections have also been carried out on the pedestrian street of Klimos and in the area of 28th October Avenue.
At the same time, the competent services systematically check possible breeding sites, such as abandoned swimming pools, elevator shafts, open channels and other places where water may remain.
According to the Municipality, in about 60% of the cases where a complaint is submitted, a mosquito outbreak is detected either in the house itself or in a neighbouring premises.
For this reason, citizens are asked to systematically check yards and outdoor areas and remove stagnant water from containers, pot plates, watering troughs, gutters, abandoned pools and other places.
The fight against mosquitoes, as the Municipality points out, is a matter of public health and quality of life, with the new drone interventions being added to the existing program of spraying and controls.
