Incidents of deception of citizens through text messages have been on the rise recently, with fraudsters falsely appearing as the Cyprus Police and demanding the payment of alleged extrajudicial fines.
The messages include an electronic link, through which recipients are invited to proceed with payment. The goal of the perpetrators is to steal personal and banking data and extort money.
The Police clarifies that these messages are fake and have nothing to do with the Cyprus Police.
At the same time, it calls on citizens not to open links received via SMS, email or chat applications from unknown or suspicious senders and to avoid registering personal or banking information on websites of dubious origin.
To confirm any pending issue with the Police, the public is urged to communicate exclusively through its official communication channels.
