The Department of Labour Inspection recommends that consumers and especially parents pay special attention when buying school supplies for their children, warning that some products may contain dangerous chemicals.
In a statement, the Department notes that products that do not comply with the relevant legislation should not be placed on the market and calls on consumers to carefully check the school supplies they buy.
As he states, plastic school supplies may contain phthalates, which are classified as very toxic to reproduction, as well as cadmium, which is classified as carcinogenic.
At the same time, leather clothing or footwear may contain hexavalent chromium or Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF), substances that can cause allergic reactions.
The Department of Labour Inspection also points out that products such as superglue-type adhesives, markers, corrective liquids and coloured inks or paints have been found to contain organic solvents, such as benzene, chloroform or toluene.
These substances, as stated in the announcement, are characterized as particularly dangerous for human health.
It is also emphasized that school supplies that are classified as dangerous, for example as flammable, irritating or harmful, must bear the required hazard marking in the Greek language.
The Department lists indicative examples of non-compliant products that have been identified in the Cypriot or European market and have been registered in the European Safety Gate system.
