On each of the three days of July that passed, or 11 out of the 31 days of the month, either a yellow or orange warning for "extreme" temperatures was issued, but generally compared to other Jules it is not considered to have burned us, but simply scorched us.
This is demonstrated by the statistics of the Meteorological Service, which considers that last July was relatively mild, if we take into account that the following extreme higher temperatures have been recorded from time to time: Polis Chrysochous 41.3 Celsius, Paphos airport 41.6, Akrotiri 40.2, Larnaca airport 41.1, Athalassa 44.7 and Prodromos 36.4 degrees.
This July was the eighth warmest July since 1968 that data are kept on a systematic basis. The highest temperature, in the month of July (44.7), was recorded last year.
It is noted that regardless of the month, the highest temperature ever recorded in Cyprus had exceeded 45 degrees Celsius.
It is also worth noting that in the center of Nicosia, due to the fact that the city is full of concrete buildings, the temperature may be higher than in Athalassa, so the discomfort is greater for the residents. This is obviously the reason why, while it is reported that the temperature is e.g. "A", the various thermometers in the city center have an indication of "A+".
As for the extreme minimum temperature (usually recorded at night), this year 27.6 degrees were recorded in Polis Chrysochous, 27.8 degrees in Paphos airport, 29.5 in Akrotiri, 29.9 in Larnaca airport, 30.2 in Athalassa and 25.4 degrees in Prodromos.
As the officer of the Department of Meteorology, Chrystalla Papachristodoulou, explains to "F", last July, the yellow warnings were issued for nine days while another two days were for an orange warning. What seems to have created the feeling among many citizens that this year's July was one of the hottest, may be due to the fact that yellow warnings were issued for seven consecutive days. The highest temperatures were recorded at the Athamassa weather station in Nicosia.
The seven yellow warnings were followed by a four-day respite with "bearable" temperatures and on July 28 a temperature of 40,5 degrees was recorded. Two more days followed with a temperature of 39.2 and 39.3 and on July 31 a temperature of 40.7 was recorded. The highest temperature recorded in July was 43,2 degrees.
As for the mountains, yellow warnings, last July were issued for four days, with the temperature in Prodromos ranging between 31,8-33 degrees.
In general, the highest maximum temperature this July was 43.2 in Athalassa, 38.5 in Polis Chrysochous, 36.6 at Paphos Airport, 36.6 at Akrotiri, 38.2 at Larnaca Airport and 33 at Prodromos.
The lowest maximum temperature was 31 (compared to 20-22 recorded now) at Paphos Airport, 28.7 at Akrotiri, 31.5 at Larnaca Airport and 22.5 at Prodromos.
For those who wonder "what is the normal temperature for the month of July", from 1968 onwards, in Polis Chrysochous it is 33.4 degrees, in Paphos airport 29.9, in Akrotiri 30.9, in Larnaca airport 37.1 and in Prodromos 27.9.
On the left, the weather stations are recorded and then the maximum temperature recorded in July this year. The maximum has been recorded in Athalassa (43,2 degrees Celsius). In the next column, the "highest minimums" are recorded, i.e. the temperatures mainly of the night hours during which the temperature drops to the minimum point of 24 hours.
Again in Athalassa there was a night when the lowest temperature was 28.2 degrees. The next two are the lowest temperatures recorded in July this year. In the last two columns on the right we see the maximum and lowest extreme temperatures recorded in the month of July. The highest temperature (44.7) was recorded last year in Athalassa.
