The EDEK Paphos Municipal Group welcomes with great satisfaction the intention of the State to allocate a fund of €250,000 for the creation of a modern District Animal Shelter in Paphos, with the aim of completing the project within the next 18 months. The issue was at the center of a meeting held today at the Paphos Municipal Hall, in the presence of the Commissioner for Environment and Animal Welfare, Mr. Elias Myrianthous, and the Mayor of Paphos, Mr. Angelos Onisiforos.
This is an important and absolutely necessary development, which comes to address a perennial problem of our province and to create, at last, the necessary infrastructure for the organized and effective management of stray animals.
The Municipal Group of EDEK believes that the creation of a modern shelter is not just an obligation of the State and the Local Government, but practical proof of the respect and sensitivity of our society towards animals.
For many years, a large part of the responsibility has been transferred to volunteers, animal welfare organizations and our fellow citizens who, with personal effort and financial cost, are trying to manage a problem that requires an organized, institutional and permanent solution. They deserve special thanks and recognition.
As the EDEK Municipal Group, we clearly state our positive commitment and our full support for the implementation of the project. We are ready to contribute constructively, within the framework of our responsibilities, to overcome any problems and find the most appropriate location, with respect to both the needs of the animals and the concerns of local communities.
At the same time, we consider it particularly important for the project to proceed with a specific timetable, transparency and determination, so that the announcement can be transformed into real infrastructure and not remain a pending issue.
We welcome the initiative of the Commissioner for Environment and Animal Welfare, Mr. Elias Myrianthous, as well as the willingness of cooperation shown by the Municipality of Paphos and the other stakeholders involved.
Paphos needs a modern, organized and functional District Animal Shelter.
The Municipal Group of EDEK Paphos will support every effort that leads to its implementation and will closely monitor the progress of the project, with the aim that in 18 months we will have not only an announcement, but a real shelter that will serve the protection, care and well-being of the animals of our province.
