THE DENIA-ASTROMERITIS MOTORWAY IS ON TRACK FOR IMPLEMENTATION - €138 million IS THE COST FOR 18km - Filenews 28/8

The Denia-Akaki-Astromeritis highway is on the way to implementation, as the tender for the design and construction of the project, with an estimated cost of €138 million, has been announced. The new road, about 18 kilometers long, is expected to start construction in the first half of 2027.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, Department of Public Works, announced that on August 28, 2026, the tender for the implementation of the project "Design and construction of the Denia – Akaki – Astromeritis highway" was announced, with a deadline for submitting bids on December 18, 2026.
The project concerns the design and construction of a new motorway of four (4) traffic lanes, with a total length of approximately 18 kilometers, which will pass south of the Communities of Akaki, Peristerona and Astromeritis, in the District of Nicosia. The new motorway will connect the existing Nicosia – Kokkinotrimithia motorway (A9) with the Astromeritis – Evrychou motorway (A9), which has recently been completed and opened to traffic.

The project in question is Phase C of the Nicosia – Troodos motorway, which has been preceded by the Nicosia – Kokkinotrimithia (Phase A) and Kokkinotrimithia – Denia (Phase B) sections, while Phase D concerns the Astromeritis – Evrychou section.

Specifically, the project includes:

§ Construction of a motorway with two (2) traffic lanes in each direction, each 3.50 meters wide, asphalt supports 3.00 meters wide and a central concrete safety parapet.

§ Construction of four (4) interchanges and completion of the existing terminal interchange in the area of Denia.

§ Construction of two (2) long viaducts at the intersections of the motorway with the rivers Akaki and Peristeronas.

§ Construction of four (4) additional bridges at points of intersection with smaller streams and streams.

§ Construction of overpasses and underpasses for the interconnection of the areas on both sides of the motorway.

§ Construction of a secondary road network to serve local traffic.

The project will be implemented using the design and build method, in which the contractor will undertake both the preparation of the final study and the construction of the project, based on the requirements set by the Department of Public Works.

The tender is conducted by an open procedure and the award criterion is the most economically advantageous tender, based on the lowest price.

The duration of the project implementation is 54 months, while the period of liability for defects and maintenance has been set at five (5) years. The start of the works is scheduled for the first half of 2027, with the aim of completing the project within the second half of 2031.

The estimated cost of the project amounts to €138 million, excluding VAT. The project is financed by national resources.

This is a road project that is classified in the category of Class A technical works. Economic operators who meet the conditions set out in the tender documents are eligible to participate.

The project is included in the National Strategic Plan for the Development of Mountain Communities (ESAOK). The implementation of the project is expected to bring substantial benefits to the affected communities, as it will contribute to the decongestion of the existing road network passing through the residential areas, through the diversion of passing traffic. At the same time, road safety will be significantly improved, travel time and costs will be reduced, and the accessibility of communities to urban centers and mountainous areas will be enhanced. In addition, it is expected to support the economic and social development of the regions, creating more favourable conditions for the activation of micro-enterprises and the settlement of new families and contributing to the retention of their population.
