The water losses from the water supply system of the city and the lower area of Paphos this year are characterized by the authorities of the Paphos district as the smallest of any previous year. This fact, they point out, is not unrelated to the coordinated effort that began at the beginning of the summer season to deal with the serious losses recorded every year in the system, so that the water scarcity that afflicts Paphos does not have serious consequences this year on its water supply.
This effort, according to officials of the EOA Paphos and the Municipality of Paphos, is reflected to date in the official data, since during these months any serious damage or leak in the system was avoided, after the intensification of controls. The efforts continue with the same dedication, they stressed, so that we can enter the rainy season if possible with the greatest possible savings and management of water reserves.
EOA, Paphos Municipality, and the Paphos Traffic Police, which is involved in the effort, have set as a top priority the reduction of water losses from the Paphos water supply system, in order to avoid another summer with borderline situations in terms of water supply.
With the joint decision of the Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforos and the president of the EOA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, a joint protocol of actions has been created since June for the rapid information, licensing and execution of damage repair works, for the shortening of the procedures required for interventions in road networks and public spaces, in order to reduce the time of water loss, as well as the immediate response of the crews of the EOA Paphos in cases of leaks or damages, while facilitating traffic by the Paphos Traffic Police where required.
The two city bodies have also implemented a joint plan for monitoring and controlling water losses in the network, while the replacement of drinking water used for irrigation of municipal green spaces with water from alternative sources, such as boreholes, recycled water and other suitable irrigation sources, and the upgrading and modernization of the irrigation systems of the Municipality of Paphos are being promoted with the aim of reducing water consumption and improving efficiency.
Angelos Onisiforou and Charalambos Pittokopitis continue on a regular basis to evaluate the measures and solve problems that arise, with the visible result so far being the drastic reduction of the problems and losses of the precious liquid from the water system that supplies water to the city and the suburban area.
