A technical problem with the telecommunications system for the transmission of data from the photovoltaic parks at the Distribution Control Center of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus is due to the power outages that occurred in various areas throughout Cyprus on Friday, said EAC Spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou, adding that the new interruption early on Saturday morning was due to a failure in the electricity network of the occupied territories.
According to Ms. Papadopoulou, the EAC power plants did not face any problems either yesterday or today.
"Today's failure was the result of a problem that occurred in the occupied territories due to the fact that the two networks are connected at two points, as part of the Confidence Building Measures. Yesterday the problem was not due to production or the network but to telecommunications, as a telecommunications connection between the large photovoltaic parks is required, through which the EAC Distribution Control Center data is transferred," he then explained.
He added that the Authority continues the investigation in cooperation with the telecommunications provider in order to determine the exact cause of the problem, while at the same time actions are being taken to install a backup telecommunications line between the photovoltaic parks and the EAC Distribution Control Center to avoid similar incidents.
As he clarified, the Independent Market Operator, which is subordinate to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator, is informed every half hour exactly how much a photovoltaic or wind farm can contribute to electricity and then gives instructions to the Electricity Authority for the contribution of specific production units with liquid fuels.
He added that in order for the TSOC to be able to know how much a photovoltaic park can perform, the information is transmitted by optical fibers of the EAC provider from the photovoltaic parks to the EAC Distribution Control Center, which in turn sends all the data to the TSOC, whose role is to ensure the stability of the system and that there are no disturbances.
Besides, in today's announcement earlier today, the TSOC announced that the electricity supply of consumers affected by a technical failure in the production system within the occupied areas has been restored.
