In September, the hearing of the case against a 48-year-old Greek Cypriot who, due to special circumstances, occupied the sphere of public debate in the province of Paphos and beyond, begins.

The 48-year-old was arrested the day before yesterday for offenses mainly related to violations of the legislative framework for domestic violence, while within the same day a criminal case was registered against him. The Court set the start of the hearing for Thursday September 3.

At the same time, the Paphos District Court reserved for tomorrow, Friday, its verdict on the request of the prosecuting authority, that the accused remain in custody as a pending trial until the trial of the case.

The accusations

The 48-year-old faces charges related to psychological violence, threats, insult, disobedience of a decree and contempt of Court. According to information from "F", the alleged offenses have to do with an ex-partner of the accused and in fact, the latter, based on the indictment, allegedly violated a court order for restrictive measures.

On the basis of what was put before our newspaper, the arrest the day before yesterday came after a verbal incident that took place at a public event, where the accused and his ex-partner were found.

It occupied quite a bit

The case is considered to be peculiar and it is no coincidence that it has been the subject of journalistic publications since Tuesday night. The name of the accused is said to have concerned the authorities on the occasion of issues of public interest that came to light since the beginning of the year and are related to Paphos.

In addition to this, at least three other identical cases involving his ex-partner have been registered against him in recent years. It is for this very reason, after all, that the Republic requested that the accused remain detained as a prisoner until the trial of the case.

The main legal argument was that there is a risk of "repetition of offenses against the complainant". The two sides, the prosecution and the defense, spoke about it and as we noted, the Court reserved its decision for tomorrow.

"State negligence"

Lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou, defense attorney of the accused, was asked by "F" to comment on the developments in the case registered against his client last Tuesday.

After first referring to the facts and the request for his client's detention until the trial of the case, he commented: "Essentially, the request of the Police is based on the risk of repetition of such offenses and in my humble opinion it is completely unjustified. Two of the four cases registered against my client are dated, after more than five years have passed. Let's not forget that the presumption of innocence takes precedence here. The state's negligence in adjudicating such cases cannot be to the detriment of the accused."

Answering our question about the seriousness of the offenses, Mr. Alexandrou said that these are "alleged threats" and concluded by saying that "my client did not use violence".
