CONCLUSION ON THE FIRE IN KALO CHORIO - DISCIPLINARY BUT NOT CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITIES - WHAT APPLIES TO THE LEADERSHIP OF THE GEEF - Filenews 13/8 byAndreas Pogiatzis

No criminal responsibilities are attributed to the conclusion for the fire that broke out on July 27 at the Kalo Chorio firing range, during a training activity of the National Guard. The fire spread to a large area, threatened the communities of Agia Anna and Psevda and burned about 120 hectares of land.

According to information from Filenews, the report attributes disciplinary responsibilities to members of the National Guard, in relation to negligence in the performance of their duties.
The Chief and Deputy Chief of the GEEF were left out of the scope of the investigation, as the investigating Brigadier General, Savvas Stefanou, did not have the authority to control their actions. These are officials appointed by the President of the Republic, who is the only one who can decide to dismiss them, in consultation with the Minister of Defense.

The conclusion is expected to be forwarded to the Legal Service either today or tomorrow. However, due to the period of the Fifteenth of August, substantial developments around the case are scheduled for next week.

Special reference is also made to the meteorological conditions that prevailed on the day of the fire. According to the data included in the report, the temperatures in Kalo Chorio at the time of the fire were below the limit of 38 degrees, which applies to the use of firing ranges.
