The authorities were alerted in the afternoon by the authorities for three boats which were affected by the bad weather and rough seas in the bay between Agioi Anargyroi and Konnos in Cape Greco.
According to information, two of the boats have sunk and dismantled. It was possible to rescue a person who was on board the first. This person was safely led ashore, while the boat he was operating due to the rough seas at the scene crashed into the rocks and sank.
Then a second boat sank, after colliding with rocks. A person on board the second boat was then pulled out of the sea unconscious. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Five people on board the three boats have been rescued with the help of a helicopter of the Air Operations Unit. All of them were taken to the hospital, two of them remained for treatment.
The first boat that sank is declared as a coastal tourist and the other two are recreational. Tomorrow morning, members of the Department of Fisheries, as mentioned on our website, will go to the area and do tests to see if there is oil pollution.

The passage of the extreme storm that hit Cyprus was deadly. Rescue teams from the Search and Rescue Coordination Center recovered a dead man on Saturday afternoon who was on board one of the boats that sank in the Cape Greco area. This is the 76-year-old Greek Cypriot well-known businessman from Limassol, Dimi Mavropoulos. His daughter and cohabitant, who were on the boat with him, were taken to the hospital and are being treated.
In the afternoon, a large operation was set up to locate him, after five other people on board three boats were rescued. Dimis Mavropoulos was eventually found unconscious by divers and was taken by helicopter to the hospital, where the doctors on duty pronounced him dead.
Sources from the KSED state that his wife and daughter managed to jump into the sea, while two helicopters were already there and provided them with the necessary assistance. The 76-year-old businessman seems, according to the indications so far, to have been trapped in the wreckage of the boat.
Who was Dimis Mavropoulos?
Dimis Mavropoulos has associated his name with Cypriot entrepreneurship and motorsport. He was born in 1949 in Limassol and was a familiar figure in the city.
As a businessman, he was initially active in the trade and export of Cypriot agricultural products to the British market, continuing a family business tradition. Later in his life, he developed wider business and investment activity, with a presence in the real estate sector.
His relationship with the car goes back a long way, when from the late 1960s he participated in rally races, driving cars of different manufacturers and recording important presences on Cypriot special stages. In 1986, when he won the Cyprus Rally Championship, while in the same year he finished in second place in the Rothmans International Cyprus Rally.
In 2014 he created the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum in Limassol, where he donated his personal collection. The museum evolved into a place for the preservation and promotion of the history of the automobile.
The tragic moments in Cape Greco
Extreme weather conditions prevailed in the area, as a result of which the KSED was informed since three boats that were in danger of sinking in the bay between Konnos and Agioi Anargyroi in Cape Greco. Initially, a boat that is declared as a coastal tourist sank and a person on board was rescued. According to information, this person jumped on the rocks on his own and was rescued by members of the Police.
Boats rushed to the scene, as well as a helicopter that rescued two people from a second yacht in which the unfortunate man was also on board. The boat then sank and the man was considered missing, which is why searches were launched to locate him.
At the same time, two other people were rescued from a third boat, which was in danger of sinking, and they are in good health.
Investigations in the area will continue tomorrow to determine the causes of the tragedy. Members of the Department of Fisheries will also be in the area at the first light of day, if weather conditions allow, who will conduct tests to see if there is oil pollution in the sea.

"It is announced that, on August 29, 2026 at 14:30, the KSED activated the National Search and Rescue Plan "NEARCHOS" in the sea area of Agioi Anargyroi in Cape Greco in order to rescue people in distress from 3 boats, 2 of which were completely destroyed after they ran aground on rocks due to intense rough seas.
To carry out the Search and Rescue operation, a Helicopter of the Air Operations Unit of the Police, a Helicopter of the 460 Search and Rescue Squadron of the National Guard, a patrol of the Famagusta Police Directorate, personnel of EMAK and the Famagusta Fire Station as well as ambulances of the Ambulance Service were mobilized. During the operation, a total of 6 people were pulled out.
The first person was rescued by a patrol of ADE Famagusta and is in good health. The E-D Helicopters pulled out 5 people, two of whom are in good health and after being given first aid, they were released, while two people are being treated at the General Hospital of Famagusta.
