CAMPING IN THE AKAMAS IS PROHIBITED - Pafos Live 6/8
The Department of Forests of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment reminds the public that camping in state forests, without a permit, is an illegal act and according to the Forestry Law, it is punishable by imprisonment not exceeding one (1) year or a fine not exceeding five thousand euros (€5,000.00) or both (2) of these penalties.
Especially, during the summer months, the phenomenon of arbitrary and uncontrolled camping is observed in areas of particular environmental importance, such as the Akamas National Forest Park, which is a protected and sensitive area.
Illegal camping in these areas burdens the sensitive ecosystem, causes pollution and degradation of the natural environment, due to the dumping of waste and waste, thus disturbing wildlife and the ecosystem. Particularly worrying is the fact that illegal campers are lighting a fire, which is strictly prohibited by law. This act endangers both the lives of the offenders themselves and the forest wealth of the area, with the risk of causing catastrophic fires with unpredictable consequences.
It is emphasized that lighting a fire anywhere in the countryside is prohibited except for the preparation of food within the specially permitted and arranged areas located in organized picnic and camping areas. Lighting a fire within state forests or at a distance of 2km from its outskirts is an offense which, according to the Forests (amendment) Law of 2025, is punishable by imprisonment of up to 12 years or a fine of up to €100,000.00 or both penalties together.
