These are the figures of four US presidents, 18 meters high, which were carved on a granite slope of Mount Rushmore by the sculptor Gajon Borglum and his son Lincoln. The four presidents are, from left to right: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The idea for the construction of the monument is attributed to the historian Doan Robinson.
Construction began in 1927 and the faces of the presidents were completed between 1934 and 1939. After the death of Gajon Borglum in March 1941, his son Lincoln took over as head of the construction project. Each president was originally to be depicted from head to toe, but lack of funding led to the forced closure of work on October 31, 1941, and only the Washington sculpture includes any detail below chin level.
