Last night's plenary session of the Paphos Municipal Council, which dealt with the issue of harmonizing the service plans of the Municipality of Paphos with those of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, had an inglorious end. The municipal groups of DIKO, AKEL, EDEK and ELAM left the plenary in protest, attributing unacceptable and insulting behaviour by their colleagues.
The problem, according to the information, has been observed for some time, after what happened with the suspended Mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedonos. Members of the Municipal Council claim that certain members of the body have continuous incidents of offensive behaviours and verbal attacks against their colleagues when they disagree on issues that are being discussed.
Last night's climax of the problem, which led to the group departure of the majority of the plenary, followed the majority vote in favour of the service plan for the traffic service. This vote, which took place in the presence of a representative of the Union of Communities, was made with the provision of the condition of 18 years of service for promotion, while the minority requested that a provision of 16 years of service apply.
The departed denounced unacceptable and insulting behaviour by a minority municipal councillor after the decision, a fact, they argued, which follows similar behaviours of the same councillor in recent months.
The departure of the municipal councillors DIKO, AKEL, EDEK and ELAM resulted in the termination of the session after the voting of the service plan for traffic wardens.
