A mobilization of dozens of citizens took place yesterday in Limassol, by those who are protesting against the decision of the Council of Ministers to approve, by way of derogation, the licensing of a large commercial development (mall) in the area of Agios Athanasios.
The event takes place on Agios Athanasios Avenue, in front of the Jumbo parking lot, with the participation of citizens, local bodies, shopkeepers and representatives of organizations. The Mayor of Amathus, the Deputy Mayor of Germasogeia, representatives of AKEL, as well as other representatives of the local community are also at the scene.
The protesters express their strong opposition to the promoted development, arguing that it will further aggravate the already serious traffic problem of the area, while talking about the lack of integrated urban planning and environmental infrastructure.
The mobilization is organized on the initiative of the newly established platform "Initiative for Limassol", which states that its goal is to claim immediate solutions to the city's problems. Among its main demands are the institutional and legal reaction to licensing, the promotion of sustainable urban planning, the creation of more green spaces, the adoption of substantial measures to deal with traffic and the support of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The organizers say that the rally is the beginning of a series of actions, while in the next period they are expected to hold a press conference, during which they will present in detail the framework of their demands and the next mobilizations.
