An important milestone for the strategic development of Frederick University is the establishment of its School of Medicine, with the academic institution working feverishly to implement all the required procedures.
According to the plan, the Faculty of Medicine is expected to open its gates and welcome its first students in September 2028. It will be housed in a new building that will be erected in Limassol, next to the existing facilities of Frederick University.
A few days ago, the university announced the start of the staffing process of the Medical School under establishment, with a call for expressions of interest for academic staff positions of all levels and academic leadership positions.
At the same time, the team that will lead the establishment of the School and oversee the accreditation process of the medical curriculum has been appointed, which will be based on the established model of the University of Manchester and will be offered in accordance with international standards and best practices in medical education.
As the Rector of Frederick University, George Demosthenous, told "F", "the announcement of the establishment of the new Medical School of our University, in strategic partnership with the emblematic and internationally recognized University of Manchester, a true leader in medical education, is a milestone for academic events".
"Personally, I feel deeply proud, as this development is the result of a systematic and intensive preparation that exceeds two years, with continuous and productive meetings of our working groups," said the rector, adding that "at the moment, the Administration, the Rector's Authorities and the leadership team of the preparatory committee of our university are working intensively, having as a clear goal the opening of the School in 2028".
According to Mr. Demosthenous, the foundation's strategic choice is not large openings. "Instead, we are creating a Medical School that will place absolute emphasis on quality and strict admission criteria, maintaining a targeted number of admissions."
"At the same time, in close cooperation with the specialized teams of the University of Manchester, we have already proceeded with the first announcement for the staffing of pre-clinical specialties, while the new announcements for clinical specialties are being launched. These procedures are implemented in collaboration with the hospitals with which we have signed agreements, with the aim of organizing the infrastructure for the clinical training of our students.
From the very first day of the announcement, there has been a great interest in cooperation from eminent scientists abroad, international and repatriated Cypriots, as well as from leading scientists from Cyprus and Greece", said the rector.
The development of the School is led by Professor Dimitris Kardamakis, who has assumed the duties of the Founding Dean of the Medical School and the team is completed by Dr. Spyros Pipis as Deputy Dean of Clinical Education and John Surrey as Chief Operating Officer.
