LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION - Pafos Live 11/7

The Plenary Session of the Parliament unanimously approved the amending regulations for swimming pools, which abolish, on a transitional basis, the obligation for the Cyprus Lifeguard Federation to recognize or certify diplomas and certificates held by lifeguards working in public swimming pools.

The regulations amend the existing framework, so that the employment of a safety supervisor in recreational pools, sports facilities, hotels and other tourist accommodation is no longer required to certify lifeguard diplomas by the Cyprus Lifeguard Federation.

In particular, the provision that the lifeguard diploma or certificate had to come from a school recognized either by the Cyprus Lifeguard Federation or by a competent authority of a Member State of the European Union and, in addition, be certified by the Federation itself is deleted from the regulations.

The regulation is of a transitional nature and will apply until a permanent and institutionally integrated solution is formed for the licensing and recognition system of lifeguards' qualifications.

DISY MP Nicoletta Konstantinou said that her party approves the regulations with the safety of citizens in mind and to end an existing distortion. At the same time, she called on the Government to submit a new, comprehensive and effective legislative framework in a timely manner.

The amending regulations were approved by the Plenary with 51 votes in favour.
