In the context of targeted and intensive operations that began on June 19, 2026, the Anti-Drug Service (YKAN) proceeded to dismantle a ring that was active in the import and trafficking of large quantities of dried poppy pods, of the type of length or sleeper, as well as to investigate a total of 17 related cases on a nationwide basis.
The operations were carried out throughout Cyprus, with the main aim of cracking down on the rings active in the import of this type of drug and protecting citizens from the harmful consequences of its trafficking and use.
As part of the investigation of the specific cases, YKAN proceeded to confiscate about 60 kilograms of sleeping boat and arrest 21 persons, while two other persons are wanted.
Of the 17 cases that emerged, 16 have already been registered before a Court and referred to the Criminal Court for trial, while 21 defendants are in custody as awaiting trial.
During the investigation of the cases, testimony was obtained against three of the 21 defendants that in the last three months they allegedly imported other quantities of sleeping water and were charged.
As part of YKAN's actions to stop the import of this type of drug, a foreign company was contacted, through which the parcels containing the confiscated quantities had been sent to Cyprus. During this communication, relevant recommendations were made and measures were taken, as a result of which the possibility of sending such products to Cyprus was terminated.
YKAN continues its operations with undiminished intensity, with the aim of identifying and dismantling drug trafficking rings, as well as preventing their import into the Republic of Cyprus.

The Supreme Court awarded an increase in general compensation from €50,000 to €80,000, accepting an appeal of a former quarry employee who was injured in 2010 while working, after ruling that the responsibility for the accident at work lies entirely with the employer company. He also awarded €15,000 for a reduction in his income capacity.
In yesterday's decision, the Supreme Court accepted the employee's appeal and rejected the employer's cross-appeal.
It is noted that the appellant, an engineer and welder, was injured in December 2010, while performing work ordered by the respondent employer company, which is engaged in quarrying work. In a lawsuit filed against the respondent, he claimed compensation since he considered that the sole responsibility for the accident at work lay with his employer.
As reported, the Court of First Instance, after a hearing, found that the employer was liable, but also that the appellant had contributory negligence, which he determined at a rate of 30%. Regarding the general compensation, it is stated that it considered that the amount of €50,000 constitutes "fair and reasonable compensation" and like the above amount, it bears interest not from the date the accident at work took place but from the registration of the claim report, while it also rejected the claim for compensation due to reduction of income capacity.
Regarding the issue of liability, the Court of Appeal states that the appellant was performing work assigned to him by the employer, noting that the accident at work took place, "as the Court of First Instance found, and it is not disputed", because another employee "put it (the tape) into operation by mistake, so the plaintiff and his colleague fell into the abyss of collecting the rocks". It concludes that the appellant did not breach his duty to protect himself and that the responsibility for the accident at work "lies entirely" with the employer/respondent.
Regarding the amount of €50,000 awarded as general compensation, the Supreme Court notes that the plaintiff, as a result of the accident in question, suffered a dislocation of the right shoulder and a fracture of the major humeral tumour. Taking into account the fact that the appellant underwent three surgeries, the pain "and suffering that he suffered and that still exists, as well as the difficulties and permanent residues to which the Court of First Instance referred, without ignoring the reduction, over time, in the value of the money, We consider that the amount awarded is manifestly insufficient to constitute an incorrect calculation to justify our intervention," the Court of Appeal states. "We consider that an amount of €80,000 is right and fair, as general compensation," he notes.
The Court, in addition, held that the appellant is at a disadvantage in the labour market as a result of his injury and permanent remains, and taking into account his income and age at the time of his dismissal by the respondent, who is approximately 56 years old, also held that an amount of €15,000 "constitutes fair and reasonable compensation for the loss of earning capacity".
Regarding the interest that the Court of First Instance decided to award in respect of general indemnities – 1/2 of the statutory interest and not full statutory interest – the Supreme Court ruled that, as far as general indemnities are concerned, the €80,000 will bear statutory interest from the date of the accident at work, i.e. from 9/12/2010 until payment.
For the €15,000, it awarded that this amount should bear legal interest from the date of issuance of the first instance decision, i.e. from 13/7/2017 until payment.
