The Women's Movement POGO today filed an official complaint with the competent authorities for an incident of online gender-based violence and the reproduction of sexist content on social media.

In its announcement, POGO emphasizes that "the targeting, pillory, objectification and online harassment of women cannot be treated as another aspect of everyday life on the internet. They are forms of gender-based violence that offend the dignity of women, reinforce misogyny and cultivate a climate of tolerance towards violence."

As POGO, they believe that such phenomena must be investigated immediately and effectively, as the protection of women from all forms of digital violence and abuse is the responsibility of the State, the competent authorities and the platforms themselves.

"We will not remain silent in the face of sexism and gender-based violence, wherever they manifest themselves. We will continue to use every institutional means to defend the rights and dignity of women," the statement concludes.

The meeting between a victim and a 29-year-old defendant evolved from a transaction for the purchase of cryptocurrencies to a pre-planned robbery with a loot of €100.000. The Limassol Criminal Court imposed prison sentences of 5 and 2,5 years on the latter today, Friday (10/7), after admitting to the charges of robbery and money laundering. At the same time, the Court issued an order confiscating his property.

The case is still pending before the Criminal Court regarding the 29-year-old's co-accused, who did not admit the charges he faces, with the case set for a hearing.

As can be seen from the facts of the case, the actions of the 29-year-old were premeditated and pre-planned.

Specifically, the accused had been acquainted with the complainant since 2022, transacting with him to purchase cryptocurrencies. Taking advantage of this relationship, on December 23, 2024, he contacted him through an online application and asked him to meet at a place he himself indicated.

The complainant went to the scene accompanied by his mother, in possession of the amount of €100,000 for the purchase of cryptocurrencies. The accused, along with another person, boarded his vehicle and after the 29-year-old sat in the passenger seat, he asked him to show him the money. As soon as the complainant opened the bag, he snatched it from his hands. The second person hit him on the head and the complainant began to bleed.

He tried to prevent the defendant from escaping with the money, however, the co-defendant continued to beat him, giving the 29-year-old the opportunity to escape on foot.

Subsequently, the 29-year-old fled to the occupied territories and attempted to go by sea to Turkey. However, he was arrested by the occupation authorities and handed over to the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, where he was arrested on a court warrant.

In its decision, the Criminal Court underlined the seriousness of the offenses committed by the 29-year-old, emphasizing the need to impose dissuasive penalties. As he points out, the case was not about a momentary illegal behaviour, but actions that demonstrated the pre-planning and deception behind the actions of the 29-year-old accused.

In determining the sentence, the Court took into account that the defendant did not offer any compensation to the complainant for the injuries he suffered, the particularly large amount of money stolen, and the fact that it was never returned.

In favour of the 29-year-old, his admission, his intention to testify as a prosecution witness against his co-accused, his clean criminal record, as well as his personal and family circumstances were taken into account. However, the Court pointed out that in offences that are on the rise, personal circumstances are of only limited importance.
