Intensive investigations are being carried out by members of the Famagusta Police to identify and arrest all the foreigners, who were involved, on Wednesday night, in the clashes in Xylofagou. About 20 people participated in the incident, who, according to eyewitnesses, were holding weapons, hammers and sharp objects. The incredible thing is that one of the people involved tried to hit the members of the opposing team with his vehicle, as a result of which it ended up in an adjacent property, causing damage.

According to information from Filenews from police sources, the owner of the vehicle in question has been identified and an arrest warrant has been issued against him. As for the 27-year-old from Syria, who was arrested yesterday afternoon, he was brought before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni for the issuance of a detention order. This is the owner of a second vehicle, which was spotted at the scene.

Under the microscope of the investigators of the case is also material from closed surveillance circuits, which is being processed by the investigators of the case in an attempt to identify other persons. According to information, another 10-15 people who appear to be involved in the clashes are being sought.

The Police were informed about the incident at 9:40 on Wednesday night, with the foreigners leaving the area in a hurry, however, leaving behind important evidence. Among them is the vehicle involved, hammers, crowbars, other weapons and bags. "When I went to the area around 10:30 there was a lot of commotion, because as they were sitting on the street, they saw a car at breakneck speed heading towards people. You realize what happened. There I was informed that the problem arose due to financial differences between teams from Syria. One group went to take on another group with iron bars, wood and sharp objects. Most of them live in our community", the community president of Xylofagou, Giorgos Ioulianos, had told Filenews, who cited information that some of the people involved act as "employers", who sell services, through the provision of foreign workers, to contractors.

Mr. Ioulianos expressed the assessment that what happened is the result of the lack of a strategy for the employment of foreign workers. Citing his status as a former trade unionist, he indicated that "every astute person is given the right to have workers in his name and to 'sublet' them elsewhere. This should concern the state and put an end to this slave market. That's what I call it. Is it possible for someone to be paid for workers he gives elsewhere and to exploit these people by giving them smaller wages? Here are the results."

In this case, as Mr. Ioulianos said, the employers are from a third country and grant workers for construction work. "It seems that some people do not keep the agreements they make and these groups are being created against other groups," he noted.

The criminal organization

From Dubai, he allegedly directed and coordinated the actions of the organization.

Despite the distance, he reportedly maintained full control, giving specific commands.

According to EL.AS officers, the remote administration proved the excellent organizational structure of the organization, which operated with a strict hierarchy and strategy, seeking to consolidate its dominance through fear, terrorism and violence.

In fact, his orders and coordination ensured the continued expansion and success of his criminal activity at the national level.

The organization consisted of a hard core of trusted members, as well as a wider network of accomplices who operated both outside and inside prisons.

The Supreme Court yesterday annulled the order issued by a lower court that obliged a suspect in a major drug case at the time to give a saliva sample for DNA and fingerprints.

This is a case that was investigated last February - March after the detection by YKAN of a large amount of drugs in Nicosia.

In this context, the applicant was also arrested as a suspect, who had refused to give a sample of genetic material, as a result of which a decree d. 6/3/2026 which obliged him to give DNA.

The applicant – defendant had previously secured permission by applying through his lawyers Nikos Zenios and Michalis Kazakos for Andreas Christou & Associates LLC, because the lower Court issued the contested decree in excess of jurisdiction, in a mechanistic manner without the necessary judicial process for it to draw its own judicial conclusion and justify the necessity of issuing it.

According to Judge E. Ephraim, "A judge who hears any application for the issuance of an arrest or search warrant must be satisfied by the testimony before him that all the reasons justifying the issuance of the warrant are met. The opinion of the police officer declaring under oath is not enough and that the Judge should proceed with his own mental process and draw his own conclusion as to whether the issuance of the requested warrant is justified."

In the present case, the decision states, the lower court issued the decree saying that it read the affidavit filed on behalf of the Police and listened to everything that was said by or on its behalf.

It appears that the only testimony that was put before the lower Court was the oath that accompanied the application and that there was no additional oral testimony or clarification on the part of the Police in support of the application, before the issuance of the decree.

In light of the above data, the Supreme Court notes, "it is obvious that the lower Court did not expressly state either that it was satisfied with the issuance of the requested decree or that its issuance was deemed justified".

In conclusion, he noted that "the lower Court read the oath, but proceeded to issue the decree without recording in any way its own judicial judgment". Hence he annulled the decree.
