AKROTIRI - PAN-MUNICIPAL GATHERING REGARDING THE ANTENNAS OF THE BASES - Filenews 7/7 by Ioanna Mantziipa
The reaction of the Municipality of Kourion to the plans of the British Bases for the installation of new antennas in Akrotiri is entering a new phase, as the municipal authority invites the residents to a pan-municipal gathering tomorrow, Wednesday, with the aim of informing and making decisions on further actions.
The rally will take place at 7 pm in the multi-use room of the Akrotiri Primary School, with the municipality describing the issue as particularly important for the area and calling for mass participation of the citizens.
This development comes a few days after the public statements of the mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, during the meeting of the mayors and the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the MPs of the province, where he raised the issue of the British Bases as one of the most important challenges facing the municipality today.
Mr. Georgiou described the issue as "particularly critical and sensitive", noting that it affects not only the Municipality of Kourion but also the province of Limassol in general. As he mentioned, about 110 of the 115 square kilometers of the area of the British Bases are within the administrative boundaries of the municipality.
At the same time, he announced that the Municipality of Kourion is taking legal action in relation to the plans of the Bases for the expansion of the antenna network, calling on the state to support the efforts of the local authority. "We believe that the central state should stand by us. If he doesn't, we will move on," he said.
Referring to the downing of the drone last March, the mayor claimed that the incident highlighted, in his view, weaknesses in the management of issues related to the safety of citizens in the area of the British Bases.
