A disturbance was caused on Monday night in Limassol, when two balconies of a seven-storey apartment building collapsed under conditions that are being investigated.

The incident took place in the area of Kapsalos on the side of Petrou Tsiros and Ilyssos streets. According to the first information, the balcony of the 4th floor detached, first fell on the lower balcony of the 3rd floor and then the debris ended up on a parked vehicle on the ground floor, causing extensive material damage.

Members of the Fire Service rushed to the scene, who proceeded with the necessary actions to secure the area.

The Civil Defense is proceeding with a preventive evacuation of the apartment building. According to filenews, 35 families live in the building, which will be removed for safety reasons.

Engineers from the Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA) have been on the scene from the first moment, carrying out on-site assessments of the situation in the building.

According to information, the President of the EOA, Giannis Tsouloftas, asked the Civil Defense for the immediate evacuation of the apartment building, while at the same time it was requested to take care of the temporary housing of the tenants for the night. The full assessment of the static adequacy of the building is expected to be completed in the morning by the competent engineers.

According to the spokesman of the Fire Service, Andreas Kettis, there were no injuries from the incident. The Fire Brigade has already secured the tent, which will be handed over to the Police and the officials of the EOA Limassol for further examinations.

At the same time, the Civil Defense has undertaken the hospitality and care of the tenants until the necessary inspections of the building are completed.

Investigations into the causes of the collapse continue.
