The completion of the implementation of the Voluntary Solidarity Mechanism (VSM) of the European Union (EU) in Cyprus, yesterday, Wednesday, was announced today by the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection and the Asylum Service.

As reported, the Mechanism relocated 3,039 applicants for international protection from Cyprus to other EU Member States, with the aim of supporting frontline Member States disproportionately affected by migration flows, with the relevant actions being fully funded by the EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

It is recalled that Cyprus recorded the highest number of relocations among the five frontline Mediterranean Member States participating in the Mechanism, namely Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta and Spain.

"The completion of the programme confirms the effectiveness of the operational coordination between the Republic of Cyprus, the European Commission, the European Asylum Agency (EUAA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the participating Member States. At the same time, it highlights the importance of practical European solidarity in managing migration challenges," it is noted.

With the implementation of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum from June 12, 2026, Cyprus further strengthens its cooperation with the rest of the EU Member States, within the framework of the European solidarity and shared responsibility mechanisms, the Deputy Ministry concludes.
