FYTIRIS - WE WANT A MODERN, EFFICIENT AND HUMANE POLICE - QUALITY IS LINKED TO EDUCATION - Filenews 19/6

The state recognizes and supports the work of the Cyprus Police, knowing that its members are on the front line every day, many times under difficult conditions, with increased demands and great pressure, said the Minister of Justice and Public Order Costas Fytiris in his greeting at the closing ceremony of the academic year 2025 – 2026, which took place on Friday at the Cyprus Police Academy.

We know, he continued, that the quality of policing is directly linked to the quality of training, guidance and continuous professional development of its members, which is why strengthening education, upgrading skills and cultivating a proper professional culture are constant priorities.

"We want a modern, efficient and humane Police, which can respond to the challenges of the time, but also inspire confidence. To operate with a plan, knowledge, discipline and respect," he stressed.

Referring to the ceremony, during which members of the Police who took first and second place in the Paid Police Cup Competition for 2026 and members who distinguished themselves in the Basic Crime Detection Training Program were awarded, as well as the Cadets and Probationary Police Officers who excelled in the Training Series of the Academic Year 2025 – 2026, Mr. Fytiris said that it is dedicated to the effort, in progress and in the recognition of those who stood out and that behind every award there is a path of effort, perseverance, discipline, study and consistency, which is why nothing that is recognized today is accidental.

In a Corps such as the Police, "a distinction does not only concern the person who is awarded, but has a wider meaning, because it serves as an example for colleagues, cultivates fair play and reminds that serious work, consistency and professionalism must be recognized", added the Minister of Justice.

''The Cyprus Police needs executives with knowledge, character, judgment and willingness to become constantly better, especially at a time when demands are increased, crime is changing, the methods of illegals are evolving and technology is creating new challenges. Society is asking for more security and more efficiency, but at the same time it is also asking for more accountability, more transparency and a more meaningful relationship of trust with the Police", stressed Mr. Fytiris.

In his greeting, the Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, said that in an ever-changing security environment, knowledge, specialization and operational readiness are basic conditions for the effective fulfilment of our mission.

"Through the work of the Police Academy, the members of the Police acquire the necessary skills to respond competently, professionally and responsibly to the modern requirements of policing," he noted.

He congratulated all the award-winning members of the Police, saying that "your distinction is a recognition of the diligence, dedication and consistency you have shown during your studies at the Police Academy and is an example to be followed by all members of the Police Force".

He also expressed his sincere thanks to the Management and the Staff of the Police Academy for the important work they perform, contributing substantially to the formation of well-trained and capable human resources, which is the most valuable asset of the Police for the effective fulfilment of its high mission.

Andreas Angelides, Director of the Police Academy in his greeting stated that education is what transforms knowledge into competence, ability into self-confidence and self-confidence into effective leadership and that this is exactly what the Cyprus Police Academy serves.

"Today is an important moment in recognition of the effort, dedication and excellence. At the same time, it is an opportunity to reflect on the work carried out at the Police Academy and its contribution to strengthening the mission of the Cyprus Police Force," he added.

Referring to the activities and actions during the academic year 2025 – 2026, Mr. Angelidis said that 107 educational programs were carried out in which 3572 members participated, 692 members of services other than the Police, attended various trainings during the academic year 2025-2026 and 92 members participated in 74 trainings abroad in the context of cooperation with various organizations.

Mr. Angelidis also referred to the upgrading of existing education, saying that visits to the various training programs implemented at the Police Academy have increased, noting that the Police Academy is rapidly proceeding with a complete program of modernization of education and concluded by congratulating the awardees.
