The British Bases Police are looking for testimonies from neighbours, as well as closed surveillance circuits in order to shed light on the causes of the inconceivable tragedy in Xylofagou, in which two boys aged 8 and 10 lost their lives.
These are two brothers from Bulgaria, who died a horrible death, in their father's car in which they were found locked yesterday afternoon. The two children arrived in Cyprus in mid-May, to go on vacation with their father, who lives and works in our country.
"They told us that in the morning the father got up and went to work, so did his partner, and the babies were left alone at home. Then it seems they got into the car, locked themselves in and could not get out and died of suffocation," the community leader of Xylofagou, Giorgos Ioulianos, told Filenews, noting that this is one of the biggest tragedies that have occurred in recent years in the community.
Until last night, however, it had not been clear how the two boys locked themselves in the car, in which they seem to have stayed for hours, given that burns were found on their bodies. The saloon car was parked in a field next to the apartment building where the father and his partner lived. First, according to testimonies, the father left for work and then at 8 in the morning his partner.
The children were located in the vehicle in the afternoon and rescuers had to break the windows of the vehicle to free them. An ambulance crew went to the scene and tried to provide first aid, however it was too late.
Late yesterday afternoon, the British Bases Police arrested the children's father and stepmother, as they are suspected of possible negligence.
Both the children's father and their stepmother will appear before the Court today at 11:00 to decide whether detention orders will be issued. In the meantime, upon hearing the news of the death of the two children, the community of Xylofagou froze. Dozens of residents remained at the scene until late Sunday night, who rushed to ask for information on the circumstances of the death of the two children.
Update : A 30-year-old man from Bulgaria and his 38-year-old partner, who are suspected of negligence in connection with the death of two boys aged 8 and 10, who were found dead yesterday afternoon in their father's vehicle, were brought before the Court of the British Bases of Dhekelia. A punch-up involving dozens of inmates broke out at the central prison on Sunday, with wardens being called in from other wings to restore order.
Sources said prisoners on different sides clashed violently for reasons so far unknown.
They used bats, knives and other assault weapons, and some people were injured.
On Monday morning, a sweep of prison cells produced a number of sharp objects, which were confiscated.
All inmates in the wing were locked in their cells until the administration decides on the next moves.
The issue of understaffing has resurfaced, with the sources saying it was impossible for the two or three wardens on each wing to maintain order.
