A new case of fraud and extortion via the internet, of a sum of money from a bank account, is being investigated by the Police, following a complaint submitted today to the TAE Nicosia.

According to the complaint, a citizen received a phone call on May 26 from a suspicious woman, who spoke in English, but with an Asian accent and who claimed to be an operator of an online financial transaction and payment platform. Under false pretexts regarding the security of the account that the citizen maintains on the online platform, the suspect persuaded her to put a specific online application on her mobile phone, through which the suspect gained access to her phone and online bank accounts, from where she managed to extract an amount of  €2,992.

On the occasion of this new complaint, the Police recommends special attention to the public, pointing out that providing other persons with access to electronic devices, as well as access to online accounts, should be avoided, while personal data and bank accounts should be protected and never disclosed.

Citizens are urged, as always, to carry out a check to verify any calls or messages they receive. Such control and verification should be done through the official and notified communication channels of the organizations involved.
