More than 100 schools have so far closed circuit video surveillance, a measure implemented following a decision by the Ministry of Education, to ensure the safety of units, students and teachers, as well as to prevent destruction, vandalism and other delinquent behaviour.
Other school units have also taken their turn, with the information stating that the program for the installation of such systems is proceeding normally. However, in addition to the specifications that must be met and which have been pointed out several times, a key action that must be taken is the appointment of a responsible person or his authorized representative, for access to the Central Digital Recorder, where the camera material is recorded.
The responsible person is the principal or other person authorized by him, who works in the school unit. It is also recommended by the Ministry of Education to appoint a second person from the school, also authorized by the principal, as a replacement.
The above are reminded to schools again through a circular of the Office of Safety and Health of the Ministry, and at the same time they are asked to send the name and contact phone number of the person in charge of each school unit, as well as the replacement for this purpose.
In addition, it is pointed out that according to the instructions of the Police, in order to be able to deal with various incidents that may occur in the school units in a timely manner, the person in question and/or the substitute will be responsible for immediately informing the relevant police station, for the handling of the matter. It is clarified that the stored data should be available to the investigative authorities as soon as possible, and not after the expiration of the time for their deletion, which is determined by instructions of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection.
