System will track traffic flow, speeds and congestion in Nicosia and surrounding areas, with full rollout expected by mid-2026.
A full-scale rollout of 74 new traffic cameras is currently underway, forming the main system for collecting data to manage and monitor road traffic.
Civil engineer and transport specialist Cleopatra Faedonos told “K” that installation work is progressing at a rate of about five locations per day, with full deployment expected to be completed by the end of June 2026. The system will only become fully operational once it is connected to the electricity grid by the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC). For this purpose, the Public Works Department has already submitted all necessary connection applications and is gradually receiving the relevant technical conditions from the EAC.
What the cameras will record
Asked about the type of data the system will collect, Faedonos explained that the cameras will gather multi-layered traffic information, including vehicle numbers and density per lane, driving speeds, vehicle classification (cars, motorcycles, trucks), lane occupancy, and traffic queue formation. The data will be used exclusively for traffic management, statistical analysis, and transport planning purposes.
Where they will be installed
The camera network will cover a significant part of the Nicosia district and surrounding mountainous areas, according to Faedonos. In the capital, installations will be placed at key intersections including Strovolos, Griva Digeni Avenue, Makariou III Avenue, Kennedy Avenue, Famagusta Avenue, Kallipoleos, Aglantzia, Stasinou, Stavrou, Konstantinoupoleos, Athalassas, Agios Andreas, Agios Pavlos, Agios Georgios, Grigori Afxentiou, Agia Triada, Agios Dometios, and nearby areas.
The system will also extend to the wider Nicosia district and regional road network, covering areas such as Pera Chorio, Alambra, Latsia, and Tseri, as well as key routes including the E306, E309, E902, and E903.
Additional cameras will be installed on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway south of Kalo Chorio, while coverage will also extend to parts of the Troodos mountain road network, including locations near Kakopetria and Agrokipia.
